![]() Purpose-built for ANNE by production company Imagine Nation, Theater Amsterdam is an 1100-seat theatre with a circular auditorium, allowing for quick scene changes through the use of a track system on which sets can be moved speedily into place by being driven around the audience seating banks. This meant that ANNE was the first adaptation of the diary to be allowed to quote direct passages, whereas earlier version had had to resort to rephrasing Frank's literal wording. The initiative for the production had come from the Anne Frank Foundation in Basel, set up by Otto Frank after the war to safeguard the legacy of Anne Frank and her writing, and to educate about the Holocaust. Exterior (front) of the building, with its logo visible on the right, and a poster for theatre production 'ANNE' on the left.ĪNNE opened in Theater Amsterdam on May 8th 2014 in the presence of king Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and Buddy Elias, at the time the last remaining family member of the Franks. Theater Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. ![]() ![]() Anne steps out of the tableau one final time, speaks a passage from her diary about her ambition to become an author, and disappears into a sunrise. The play ends with a faint memory of Anne and Margot, slumped together in Bergen Belsen concentration camp where both would perish, surrounded by a crowd of anonymous concentration camp victims. Otto Frank, the only inhabitant of the annex to survive the war, tells in a monologue of what happened to the two families and to Fritz Pfeffer after their arrest, their transit to camp Westerbork, and their deportation to Auschwitz, where the eight part ways. Anne lives through puberty, her teenage years, conflicts with her family, and a burgeoning sexuality, but is forced to undergo it all in the cramped 500 square foot of the annex.Īfter nearly two years, the secret annex is discovered and the eight Jews in hiding are taken away by German soldiers and Dutch police. Anne finds solace in her diary, passages of which she reads out or relates to Schiff. Tensions between the two families begin to rise, and similarly between Anne and Pfeffer, with whom she is made to share a room. Later that year, Jewish dentist Fritz Pfeffer also joins. A week later, they are joined by the Van Pels family: Otto's business partner Hermann, his wife Auguste and their teenage son Peter. The family arrive in the annex, aided by Otto Frank's former colleagues and helpers Miep Gies and Jan Gies. A few weeks later, Anne's sister Margot Frank is summoned to report to a Nazi work camp in Germany, and their father, Otto Frank, decides to take the family into hiding in the annex at the back of his former company in central Amsterdam. Anne is given a red and white checkered autograph book which she decides to use as a diary. The story jumps back in time to Anne Frank's thirteenth birthday in the Frank family home at Merwedeplein in Amsterdam. Anne Frank subsequently frequently steps into and out of the narrative and back into the frame story to talk to Schiff, who remains part of the play as a confidante of Anne's. She tells him her story, in chronological order, of the time between June 1942 and August 1944. The girl reveals herself to be Anne Frank, a childhood friend of Schiff's from Amsterdam. There, she runs into Dutch emigré Peter Schiff, who, like herself, has survived the war and has since established a publishing business in Paris. A girl in her early twenties, a student at a prestigious Parisian university, meets with friends and fellow students in a Paris restaurant. The play also formed the basis for the first German film adaptation of the diary.ĪNNE begins with a framing narrative set in Paris some years after the end of the Second World War. After a near two-year run in the Netherlands, the play closed in 2016, and had production runs in Germany and Israel. As such, Anne was the first adaptation allowed to quote literal passages from the diary. The play was the first major new adaptation of Frank's diary since the 1955 play, and was both authorised and initiated by the Anne Frank Foundation in Basel, the organisation set up by Frank's father Otto Frank to preserve his daughter's legacy and work. The secret annex behind Otto Frank's company in Amsterdam.ĪNNE is a 2014 play dramatising the story of Jewish diarist Anne Frank's period in hiding in the Secret Annex in Amsterdam during the Second World War. The years Anne Frank spent in hiding from the German occupation of the Netherlands. Theater Amsterdam in Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Graph paper maker time units1/31/2024 ![]() SummaryĪdding inequalities to your algebraic repertoire allows you to calculate when one quantity is more or less than another.ġ. Whatever operations we do on one part we must do to all three parts. The solution should contain x in the middle. Solve and graph the solution on the number line.Įxplanation: This problem has two inequalities. Study Tip: The rule explaining the difference between solving equality equations and inequality equations should be written down on a note card and memorized along with an example demonstrating the rule.Įxample 5. Since we divide both sides by a negative, we change the direction of the inequality. Solve and graph the solution on the number line.ĭivided both sides by -3. Multiplying by a negative reverses the order of the numbers.Įxample 4. Using ≥ makes the problem more realistic in terms of the grade Selena wants for the course.įor example, x > 3 represents all the numbers larger than 3, but not 3.Ģ. The only difference between the two problems is using the signs = and ≥. Selena has to get a 95.67 or higher on the final to get a 95 or higher for the course. So instead of setting Selena's grade = to 95, we set Selena's grade ≥ 95. Let E be the variable that represents what Selena has to get on the final exam to get a 95 or higher for the course.Įxplanation: We use the symbol ≥ to mean greater than or equal to. What does Selena have to get on the final exam to get a 95 or higher for the course? So she would be happy with a grade of 95 or higher. What Selena really wants for the course is an A*. Let E be the variable that represents what Selena has to get on the final exam to get a 90 for the course.īecause Selena studied all semester, she only has to get a 79 on the final to get a 90 for the course. Super mario sunshine 64 final boss1/31/2024 ![]() I was quite surprised at how difficult this game could be in places for what is a mainstream Mario game. This lead to me not even trying to figure out a lot of the levels on my own because I don't have the time to trial and error through the game with the limited amount of gaming time I have. ![]() Down sides to the game I would say is some of the objectives are not always logical and I would never have figured them out by myself without looking at YouTube videos of the levels. The camera improved tenfold and gives you complete fluid right-stick control like a modern platformer and that solved a lot of my frustration with 64. Using FLUDD is an absolute delight and so much fun. Gameplay wise, Mario feels extremely responsive and it's a lot of fun traversing the world. In fact the overall theme of this game is just so superbly done. And the music is just as bright and cheery as the graphics and suits the game perfectly. The polish added for this 3D All-Stars version really brings the best of the brilliant art direction of the game. It really is a stunningly beautiful and cheery game that you really enjoy spending time in. It really looks and feels very modern and the environments and characters and enemies are a joy to look at. The game is gorgeous to look at and really belies it's age of 21 years now. Super Mario Sunshine (2002) This game I expected to like because of the setting and the look and feel of it and I ended up loving it. This one I just tried to finish ASAP and did not really enjoy it. Very unlike what you'd expect from a Mario game. The boss fights with Bowser were horribly imprecise and relied a lot on luck not skill. The camera is poorly implemented and you're constantly fighting with it, and because the shadows aren't great you always struggle with your spatial awareness of where your character actually is in a 3D environment which leads to some very frustrating gameplay. I didn't really enjoy playing this one so much. It feels like an early 3D game because it is one. The gameplay and movement does not feel as fluid as modern platformers and the environments feel quite basic and sparse. Playing it now in 2023, 27 years after its initial launch, it's hard to get away from the fact that the game does seem quite dated now. ![]() Super Mario 64 (1996) This game is a revered classic in Nintendo's history and because I never owned an N64 I never got to play it when it originally launched. The raw platforming isn’t particularly tight.ĩ0% Nintendo SwitchThis is a compilation of the classic 3D Marios from 1996 to 2007 so I will review each game separately. Running underneath platforms and having to play upside down can be nauseating. The bad: - Spin attack can make gameplay feel clumsy due to unforgiving hitboxes and the delay between repeating attacks. Great visual improvement and better without Wii motion controls. + Great world variety all integrated nicely into the space theme, with an expansive, easy to navigate hub world. Galaxy (95%): The good: + The space concept is incredibly well imagined, original and beautifully executed throughout. The annoying camera clipping issues remain from the GameCube. The plaza hub zone is slightly irritating to navigate. No classic Mario power ups, you use FLUDD the whole time. Not much variation in zones except the final boss. + The tropical theme visuals and soundtrack are spot on. + Great raw platforming on the secret stages which feel like a 3D World prototype. + Unique and well implemented FLUDD gameplay. Sunshine (75%): The good: + A true evolution of SM64, incredibly slick and very playable. Feels out of place in a collection that should have instead included Galaxy 2. Unpleasant to play due to the clumsy and imprecise gameplay. The bad: - Has aged poorly like many early 3D games. + Great variety and ambition for its time. My summary of each: Super Mario 64 (60%): The good: + An excellent showcase of the 3D Mario foundation. It’s a poor look considering how well emulated the games are. The presentation is uncharacteristically bland, with a menu that looks like a cheap Android system. 80% Nintendo SwitchA strong 80% for the overall package.

Silver screen theatres1/31/2024 ![]() When it opened in 1838, The Royal Polytechnic Institution in London became a very popular and influential venue with all kinds of magic lantern shows as an important part of its program. The eerie surroundings, with a graveyard and ruins, formed an ideal location for his ghostraising spectacle. In 1799, Étienne-Gaspard "Robertson" Robert moved his Phantasmagorie show to an abandoned cloister near the Place Vendôme in Paris. Some forms of theatrical entertainment would involve the screening of moving images and can be regarded as precursors of film. Movie theatres stand in a long tradition of theaters that could house all kinds of entertainment. The use of the word "theatre" to mean a "building where plays are shown" dates from the 1570s in the English language. The term "theater" comes from the Old French word "theatre", from the 12th century and ".directly from Latin theatrum 'play-house, theater stage spectators in a theater'", which in turn came from the Greek word "theatron", which meant "theater the people in the theater a show, a spectacle", literally "place for viewing". The etymology of the term "movie theater" involves the term "movie", which is a "shortened form of moving picture in the cinematographic sense" that was first used in 1896 and "theater", which originated in the ".late 14c., open air place in ancient times for viewing spectacles and plays". A screening room is a small theater, often a private one, such as for the use of those involved in the production of motion pictures or in a large private residence. Specific to North American term is the movies, while specific terms in the UK are the pictures, the flicks and for the facility itself the flea pit (or fleapit). In the countries where those terms are used, the word "theatre" is usually reserved for live performance venues.Ĭolloquial expressions, mostly applied to motion pictures and motion picture theaters collectively, include the silver screen (formerly sometimes sheet) and the big screen (contrasted with the smaller screen of a television set). The latter terms, as well as their derivative adjectives "cinematic" and "kinematic", ultimately derive from Greek κίνημα, κινήματος ( kinema, kinematos)-"movement, motion". However, some US theaters opt to use the British spelling in their own names, a practice supported by the National Association of Theatre Owners, while apart from Anglophone North America most English-speaking countries use the term cinema / ˈ s ɪ n ɪ m ə/, alternatively spelled and pronounced kinema / ˈ k ɪ n ɪ m ə/. In the US, theater has long been the preferred spelling, while in the UK, Australia, Canada and elsewhere it is theatre. In some jurisdictions, movie theaters can be licensed to sell alcoholic drinks.Ī movie theater may also be referred to as a movie house, film house, film theater, cinema or picture house. Movie theaters often sell soft drinks, popcorn, and candy, and some theaters sell hot fast food. The audience members often sit on padded seats, which in most theaters are set on a sloped floor, with the highest part at the rear of the theater. The largest theater complexes, which are called multiplexes-a concept developed in Canada in the 1950s-have up to thirty screens. In the 2010s, most movie theaters had multiple screens. The smallest movie theaters have a single viewing room with a single screen. Since the 2010s, the majority of movie theaters have been equipped for digital cinema projection, removing the need to create and transport a physical film print on a heavy reel.Ī great variety of films are shown at cinemas, ranging from animated films to blockbusters to documentaries. ![]() Since the 1970s, subwoofers have been used for low-pitched sounds. The film is projected with a movie projector onto a large projection screen at the front of the auditorium while the dialogue, sounds, and music are played through a number of wall-mounted speakers. Most, but not all, movie theaters are commercial operations catering to the general public, who attend by purchasing tickets. Tuschinski Theatre, in Amsterdam considered as one of the most beautiful movie theaters in the world.Ī movie theater ( American English), cinema ( British English), or cinema hall ( Indian English), also known as a movie house, picture house, the movies, the pictures, picture theater, the silver screen, the big screen, or simply theater is a building that contains auditoria for viewing films (also called movies) for public entertainment.
